Amazon has expanded its category system significantly, but many of these are now “ghost categories” that don’t actually surface your book to new readers.
Simply picking relevant-sounding categories is no longer enough.
In 2026, readers are increasingly using AI-driven discovery (like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews) to find books. If your metadata (title, subtitle, and backend keywords) isn’t optimized for how AI “understands” your book’s value, you will remain invisible even with a great story.
This is the biggest obstacle many new publishers might experience,
